Petition the Parliament

Petition the Parliament

A petition is a formal request made directly to the Bougainville House of Representatives, asking the House to take a specific action. For example, a petition may ask BHOR to amend a law related to a health concern, improve public services, or address issues affecting local communities.

The subject of a petition must relate to matters over which BHOR has authority—this means it must be an issue within the jurisdiction of the Autonomous Bougainville Government and connected to legislation or government administration.

Signing a petition allows citizens and community groups to express their concerns, participate in Bougainville’s legislative process, and help inform the decisions made by their elected representatives. While many petitions address issues affecting broader communities, individuals may also submit petitions about personal matters, such as correcting an administrative issue.

Petitions are usually presented to the House by Members during BHOR sitting days. Once presented, they become part of the official parliamentary record and are referred to the appropriate authorities for consideration.
