In fact, I haven’t “dieted” since 1978. The Role of Emotional Eating For instance, Sharon Osbourne discusses the role that emotional eating has played in her weight problems: If I’ve been stressed or anxious or there’s sort of an issue downstairs [in her marriage with Ozzy Osbourne], I reach towards food, emotional eating. I’ll eat the biscuits and cakes. And what’s happened is I’ve become very willing to learn new ways to deal with these problems. Rather than reaching to food, I try to work out my feelings.She learned how to spot and deal with the emotional triggers that lead to bingeing. practising mindfulness and focusing on awareness has helped her through intense emotional eating periods Sharon has found it helpful to remain present in difficult emotions and to practise what is known as ‘mindfulness’ and focus on her awareness. She has learned to quiet her mind, unwind and find perspective. By being mindful and self-aware, Sharon has been able to cut down on mindless eating and has made more conscious food selections during times of stress and because of bad emotions. She has been able to combat emotional eating and negative feelings about the way she looks. Sharon’s tale of ditching emotional eating is a reminder that weight loss is more than just a physical transition; it’s also a mental and emotional health transition. She has only just started to get her life in order. But she’s taken the first step to healing old wounds, and that’s all it takes.
