He too was dealing with managing his health and gaining from new eating habits and exercise. Benâs Health Journey And for Ben Napier, powering up a ladder with his toolbelt could no longer hide his recovery from back surgeries. From gaining 20 pounds to 50 to 70, Napierâs experience is shared by millions of people in the US who perhaps once were active and fit, but slowly gained more weight as they succumbed to poor nutrition, sedentary routines, overwork and other stressors in life. âEverybody carries some degree of extra weight â itâs this human thing,â he told me. But it is a tough force to resist. Like many, Benâs struggles with fitness and weight had become normalised, leading to a lack of urgency to change. Heâd even been so depressed that he had resigned himself to being incapacitated. âI didnât move in a good way,â he told me, recalling a typical day driving back and forth to work at his family business, running errands and making meals. Being out of shape and old, Napier considered himself âtoo weak to do too many thingsâ â and so he quit his own indoor cycling class. The decisive moment came suddenly when his wife, Sherry, handed him several couples photos taken at parties and vacations. âWe looked really great.â Some photos dated back to their wedding eight years ago, and there were some from their honeymoon. âOur healthier heyday,â he said to me. He didnât want any more âcrappy picturesâ like the last one he saw of himself taken at a party inside Suzanne Kaslerâs house. These images conveyed a passionate and energetic Napier as he leaned towards his beautiful wife, smiles lighting up their faces. A fit, fun couple who loved each other and life. With renewed energy and a strong support system, Ben set out on a path to self-transformation, incorporating regular exercise, eating with purpose, and nurturing self-care as daily habits. After taking small steps, one at a time, Ben shed nearly 50kg of weight and, with it, the sluggishness and inertia that had held him back. He is now living with the kind of health and energy levels heâd expected following graduation.
