I'm on the Rogue Echo Bike today—one of the toughest cardio machines out there—and I'm on a mission to find out. A pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so if I want to make a dent in that, I have some serious work to do. My goal is to burn as many calories as I can in one minute. Once I have that number, we'll do a little math and, voila, we'll have our answer. Spoiler alert. It's depressing. I started off strong, but, like all who dare push themselves on this bike, I soon found myself in a dark place. In the end, I burned 62 calories in one hellish minute. Not bad, right? I mean, hey, you try it. But here’s the kicker. To burn a pound of body fat, I’d need 55 more minutes at this utterly unsustainable pace, and that’s not happening. Even the fittest athletes can only keep up a work rate of about 15 calories a minute on this bike. For non-athletes, figure it's 10-12. At that rate, it would take 5-6 hours to burn just one pound of fat…and ain't nobody got time for that. So if you’ve ever wondered why people say “You can’t out train a bad diet,” there's your answer.
