When you exercise, it’s rare that you will burn any fat calories at all. The calories that you burn when you exercise are mainly stored sugar calories in the form of glycogen.  What really determines if you’re going to burn fat calories is if you keep your dietary carbohydrates or glucose really low. Drinking things like Gatorade or eating fruit after a workout will pretty much nullify any benefits of exercise. The study followed individuals who were on a strict sleep schedule for 72 hours. During this time, one group was allowed 5.5 hours of sleep; another was allowed 8.5 hours per day. All individuals followed a calorie-regulated diet. What researchers discovered was that the individuals who slept only 5.5 hours had 60% less muscle mass at the end of the study, while those who slept 8.5 hours had 40% more muscle mass. Lack of Sleep and Cortisol With too little sleep, the body is likely to produce the stress-response hormone cortisol. After sleep deprivation, cortisol levels are higher later in the day, a time when it should be tapering off to prepare the body for rest. Heightened cortisol prompts the body to store more fat and be more inclined to use other soft tissue, such as muscle, as energy, which means that sleep-deprived dieters lose more muscle and gain more fat than do those who are well rested. Adults who sleep fewer than eight hours a night report higher stress levels than those who sleep at least eight hours a night. On average, adults with lower reported stress levels report sleeping more hours a night than do adults with higher reported stress levels. Exposure to cortisol over the long term can lead to fat accumulation, as your appetite and insulin levels are continuously increased. If stress and cortisol levels stay high, so will insulin levels. Continual stress leads to a constant state of excess cortisol production, which stimulates glucose production. This excess glucose then typically is converted into fat, ending up as stored fat. The effect of this will be increased fat deposition in a certain part of the body. Cortisol and Protein Synthesis One of the principal effects of cortisol on the metabolic systems of the body is reduction of the protein stores in essentially all body cells except those of the liver. This is caused by both decreased protein synthesis and increased catabolism of protein already in the cells. Both these effects may result from decreased amino acid transport into extrahepatic tissues. Cortisol also depresses the formation of RNA and subsequent protein synthesis in many extrahepatic tissues, especially in muscle and lymphoid tissue. The decreased transport of amino acids into extra-hepatic cells decreases their intracellular amino acid concentrations and consequently decreases the synthesis of protein. OZ SCOLDED BY CONGRESS FOR ENDORSING DECEPTIVE WEIGHT-LOSS PRODUCTS Under pressure from Congress, celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz on Tuesday (17 JUNE 2014) offered to help "drain the swamp" of unscrupulous marketers using his name to peddle so-called miracle pills and cure-alls to millions of Americans desperate to lose weight. Oz appeared before the Senate's consumer protection panel and was scolded by Chairman Claire McCaskill for claims he made about weight-loss aids on his TV show, "The Dr. Oz Show." Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, acknowledged that his language about green coffee and other supplements has been "flowery" and promised to publish a list of specific products he thinks can help America shed pounds and get healthy - beyond eating less and moving more. On his show, he never endorsed specific companies or brands but more generally praised some supplements as fat busters. McCaskill took Oz to task for a 2012 show in which he proclaimed that green coffee extract was a "magic weight loss cure for every body type." "I get that you do a lot of good on your show," McCaskill told Oz, "but I don't get why you need to say this stuff because you know it's not true." Oz insisted he believes in the supplements he talks about on his show as short-term crutches, and even has his family try them. But there's no long-term miracle pill out there without diet and exercise, he said. Within weeks of Oz's comments about green coffee - which refers to the unroasted seeds or beans of coffee - a Florida-based operation began marketing a dietary supplement called Pure Green Coffee, with claims that the chlorogenic acid found in the coffee beans could help people lose 17 pounds and cut body fat by 16 percent in 22 weeks. The company, according to federal regulators, featured footage from "The Dr. Oz Show," to sell its supplement. Oz has no association with the company and received no money from sales. Last month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the sellers behind Pure Green Coffee and accused them of making bogus claims and deceiving consumers. The weight-loss industry is an area where consumers are particularly vulnerable to fraud, Mary Koelbel Engle, an associate director at the FTC, testified at the Senate hearing. She said the agency conducted a consumer survey in 2011 and found that more consumers were victims of fraudulent weight-loss products than of any of the other specific frauds covered in the survey. Oz stressed during the hearing that he has never endorsed specific supplements or received money from the sale of supplements. Nor has he allowed his image to be used in ads for supplements, he said. If you’ve attempted a weight loss diet plan of your own, then you’re probably aware that at the end of the day, weight loss is all about calories in versus calories out. Scientifically speaking this is the basic law of thermodynamics for any fat loss diet, but what this simplistic model fails to account for is how the various foods you put into your body then go about affecting these two variables. The truth is that you also need to pay close attention to the types of foods you’re ingesting everyday AND also how you go about ingesting them in your weight loss diet, as that’s what makes all the difference. In this video, I’ll go through how to eat to lose weight (with 3 diet swaps) that can enable you to lose fat faster, and provide you with a sample fat loss meal plan that puts this all together for you. The first swap you’ll want to do with your weight loss diet is to stick mostly with minimally-processed foods. Not only are these less processed foods beneficial when dieting in the sense that they generally provide more nutrients and keep us fuller for longer, but they also have another benefit that has to do with something called the thermic effect of food, which is the amount of calories that our body burns to metabolize and actually use the foods that we ingest. And one of the unique fat loss benefits about unprocessed foods is that in most cases our body burns significantly more calories when digesting unprocessed foods than it does when compared to their processed counterparts. So, you can further influence the “calories out” side of the equation and potentially speed up the fat loss process by simply swapping these foods for whole grain, less processed foods instead. Next, let’s dive into how you then go about distributing your meals (aka calories) for your fat loss diet. Research indicates that there does seem to be some indirect fat loss benefits to allocating more calories to your meals early on in the day, and is something that I’ve personally noticed as well. Now obviously this does vary for the individual and may depend on when your workout takes place, I would highly suggest even if you’re intermittent fasting, for example, to at least experiment with just shifting more of your calories to your first meal of the day as it does seem to have some unique benefits in terms of enabling you to control your cravings, burn more calories and potentially create greater fat loss results in the long run as a result. Now the last swap for your weight loss diet plan is to not only choose mostly unprocessed foods to include your diet, but choose the ones that are highly satiating. As this will enable you to better adhere to your diet and minimize any excess snacking you may be doing that’s sabotaging your calorie deficit. For example, even with calories equated for, simply swapping whole grain bread for oats instead will provide a 25% greater effect on suppressing your hunger. And similarly swapping brown rice for whole grain pasta or boiled potatoes would provide a 30%, or 60% boost in satiation respectively. So what I’d suggest is look over the index and experiment with swapping some of these more satiating foods into your diet and seeing how your body and appetite responds. So hopefully the video and sample meal plan at the end gives you a little more insight into how to eat to lose weight and how you can start planning your meals based on what I want through while still keeping everything tasty and satisfying.
