Five decades ago/ Pre 1980âs era, Obesity, type 2 diabetes & other metabolic diseases were a rare phenomenon. Our grandparents never had obesity- & they never had these fad recommendations of high protein, low carb & more but they had one aspect of our biology which we miss out now- balanced & diverse gut microbiome. No brainer- the foods they ate were rich in fibre & polyphenols which were food for their microbiome. Their gut microbes synthesised these food substrates & converted them into short chain fatty acids which secreted GLP-1- the hormone required to regulate our metabolism, satiety & appetite. GLP-1 communicates with Pancreas to regulate blood sugar response & communicates with the brain to modulate our hunger responses. Besides, our gut microbiome can make it hard to lose weight by 1.Low Grade Chronic Inflammation : Synthesising foods, not compatible with our biology, into pro-inflammatory metabolites such as LPS, TMAO & more which when released into the blood stream triggers inflammatory responses.
