Is there any areas we have start to let slip. It’s summertime maybe we are having a few more beer than we normally would have. Or we’ve started to have a dessert after dinner a couple times a week instead of once a week. Our portion sizes could be slowing increasing. It might just be that we are not quite as active. This often happens as we move from summer to winter. With the colder weather coming we are just not as motivated to go outside and do things. Once we have looked at our plan and have decided we have been sticking to it, then we need to look at the details. For example how fast do you eat? It sounds a bit like an old wives tail, if you eat too fast you’ll gain weight. But they did a study on a group of healthy men. And fed them a meal of ice cream. I know! Ice cream?! how does a guy get into one of these studies? So they split these men into 2 groups with the one group having to eat all their ice cream in 5 minutes and the other group had theirs portioned out and were given small portions every five minutes for a half hour. The over all amount of ice cream eaten by both groups was the same. Now what is interesting here is they tested various hormone responses after the ice cream was eaten. Including two that are well know to help us feel full and satiated. These are glucagon like peptide 1 and peptide YY. Both of these where substantially higher in those who took longer to eat their meal. Indicating the rate we eat can affect our feelings of fullness. So eating slower will help us to feel full and in the long run encourage us to eat less. Now if you’ve lost weight by simply eliminating processed foods and refined sugars from your diet. Or you might of had some success with intermittent fasting. But now you’ve hit a Plateau and just can’t seem to get passed it. It might be time to start counting calories. They did a meta analysis on 37 different studies involving over 16,000 people doing various different weight loss plans and what they found is after a year is those who tracked their calories lost on average 7.3 more pounds than those who did not. Do you find that your regularly blowing your diet or over consuming food on the weekends? Something that I do different with myself and some of my clients is I adjust the amount of food or the calories I consume based on lifestyle, not training days. So traditionally you would increase your calories intake and in particular your carbs on your training days and eat less on your non training days. What I do instead is I eat less during the week when my days are more structured and it is easier to stick to the plan. Leaving a few extra calories for the weekends when I tend to go out more. So for example if you are on a 2000 calorie a day plan reduce your calories Monday to Friday to 1800, allowing you an extra 1000 calories for the weekend you can either split them up over Saturday and Sunday giving you 2500 calories for each day or if you have only one day a week you tend to get off track then save all the calories for that day which would give you 3200 calories for the day. One of the additional advantages to fluctuating the amount of calories you consume each day is it keeps your metabolism from slowing down as the higher calorie days keep the body from going into what they like to call starvation mode. For this exercise, place your feet on the bench and your hands on the ground and perform a regular push-up. If this type of push-up is too difficult, then you can do a regular push-up. Now for the one-legged squat, there are a couple different ways of doing it. The first is performing the squat with a bench behind you. So, with your arms stretched out in front for balance, simply squat down onto the bench, and then drive through your leg back up. Just be sure to move in a controlled fashion on your way down, don't just drop your butt down hard on the bench. The alternative way is doing the squat without the bench. For the next superset you will pair Dumbbell Bulgarian Split Squats with Stability Ball Roll Out. With one foot out in front and your other foot back on the bench, place the dumbbells at your side, drop your hips straight down and then come back up. As you drop down, you'll feel a strong stretch in your back leg. If that exercise is too advanced, then you can do regular split squats. If you're a real beginner, then find something to balance with and perform your split squat that way. Do all repetitions for one leg and then switch legs. Once you've finished with that exercise, you'll move on to stability ball rollouts. So, on your knees, place your hands on the ball and brace your abs. Roll the ball out, and squeeze your abs to come back in. Be sure to keep your back flat throughout. For the last superset you'll pair Stability Ball Leg Curls with Dumbbell Rows. For the leg curls, get on the ground with your heels on the ball, bridge your hips up while curling the ball in and out. Repeat this movement for 20 repetitions. Next, you are going to do dumbbell rows for 20 repetitions. However, I want you to pick a weight that you can only do for 15 repetitions. When doing endurance exercises involving higher repetitions, it is really a matter of mentally committing to persevering and completing the exercise. So, try to squeeze out a few extra reps with a weight you think you can only do 15 times. So for this exercise, place your knee and hand on the bench for support and place the dumbbell at your side, with your back nice and flat. Next, row the dumbbell up to your side and then back down. So, what are we talking about? We're talking about your blood, your bones, your organs, your muscle, your skin. Again, anything that is not body fat. And just so you know how to calculate it, essentially, you need your body fat percentage. It's a little tricky sometimes, arriving at your body fat percentage, I prefer to use a skin fold caliper, you can also use what's called Bioelectrical impedance analysis, which is kinda, you know, holding onto those, you know, kinda machines Or, also you can do it by stepping on a scale as well, but again, I strongly prefer calipers, specially if you have under 30% body fat. So once you have the body fat percentage calculation, you're gonna take your total body weight, multiply it by your body fat percentage, and that's gonna give you your fat in pounds. Now, to get your LBM you're gonna take your total body weight, subtract if from your fat pounds, now you got your LBM. And so, why is that so important? Why is your LBM so important? Well, fundamentally, how to get lean, is losing fat without losing muscle. So how do you know if you are not losing muscle? If you don't have an LBM calculation, you don't know if you're losing muscle. So, having the LBM will allow you. Let's just say you're about 180 pounds. Right? You got, 30 pounds of body fat, If you lose, you know, let's just say, 50 pounds of fat, without losing your LBM, then, your body fat percentage will obviously decrease, however, if you're losing half LBM, and half fat, your body fat percentage is not gonna change so much. So that's one reason why I always talk about the LBM, you wanna keep the LBM you have, or increase it and lose as much fat as you possibly can, or that's reasonably healthy.
