The problem is how do you stay lean once the diet is over. There are numerous diet plans that you can follow that will tell you how to count your calories, count your macro nutrients, and structure your eating to lose bodyfat. But the problem is that most of them are just temporary. Chances are you don't want to be on a restricted "diet" for the rest of your life. So what you need to do is adapt better eating and lifestyle habits overall so that you can lose fat and keep it off over the long term and enjoy the process. In my opinion the single best thing you can do to start eating better is to simply go through your kitchen and clean out the stuff that's in there right now that you know you should not be eating. The processed junk foods like cookies, chips, ice cream, sweets, candy, pizza, french fries, pastries, pop tarts, etc... I'm pretty sure you know what foods are in your home that you should not be eating. It's the stuff you tend to reach for when the cravings hit, when you've had a hard day at work and feel you deserve a "treat", the stuff you often eat in excess and then feel guilty about afterwards... (i.e. processed foods). How you get rid of that junk food is up to you. The easiest thing to do would be to toss it in the trash. But if you don't like the idea of throwing away food than you can give it away - donate it to the food bank, or give it to a homeless person on the street corner, just get it out of your house so you can't eat it. Then I want you to go grocery shopping and stock your kitchen with quality nutritious foods that you know you should be eating. Stuff like vegetables, fruits, lean meats, eggs, oatmeal, rice, quinoa, berries, nuts, seeds, etc. Basically high quality nutrient dense natural unprocessed foods that will fill you up with fuel and energy without all the empty fattening calories of processed foods. The second step that I want you to take is to increase your overall activity level and perform more cardiovascular exercise. Simple things like going for a daily walk, doing some extra cardio after your weight training workouts, riding a bicycle instead of driving your car or taking public transportation, are some practical ways to increase your overall activity level and burn more calories. By simply moving more you'll increase your caloric expenditure. And by eating mostly natural unprocessed foods you'll automatically consume less calories without feeling hungry or deprived because the natural foods fill your belly faster and leave you feeling more satisfied than the empty calories of refined processed foods. I know this stuff may seem simple, and it is simple. But these steps are critical to your fat loss success. For example, if you try to go on a diet without cleaning out the junk food from your home, I guarantee that you'll eventually give into the temptations and blow your diet by eating the junk food. It's almost like someone trying to quit smoking, but keeping a pack of cigarettes in the house. Will power can only last so long, and if the temptations are in your home you're going to give into them. Keep your home base clean and supportive of your goals. And save your will power for when you are out in public for when you'll need it the most to fend off the temptations that you have no control over. In other words, a lack of sodium can cause the brain to send signals to the adrenal glands to increase the release of aldosterone, which is responsible for water balance - cortisol is released alongside aldosterone. Cortisol & Belly Fat: Tissue cortisol concentrations are controlled by a specific enzyme (11-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) that converts inactive cortisone to active cortisol. This particular enzyme is located in adipose tissues - the gene for this enzyme is expressed more by obese conditions and has also been demonstrated in research that human visceral fat cells have more of these enzymes compared to subcutaneous fat cells. Thus, higher levels of these enzymes in these deep fat cells surrounding the abdomen may lead to obesity due to greater amounts of cortisol being produced at the tissue level. Additionally, deep abdominal fat has four times more cortisol receptors compared to subcutaneous fat. Cortisol can increase the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), the major fat storing enzyme - there’s more cortisol receptors in visceral fat, hence more LPL activity there. Study – Oncotarget: The randomized, open-label pilot trial was conducted at a single institution. A total of 85 obese people were enrolled. All participants were served meals three times a day, and provided either a low salt diet or control diet with same calorie. Reductions in body weight (–6.3% vs. –5.0%) and BMI (–6.6% vs. –5.1%) were greater in the low salt group than in the control group. Extracellular water and total body water were significantly reduced in the low salt group compared to the control group. However, changes in body fat mass, visceral fat area, and skeletal muscle mass did not differ between the two groups.
