The star is famous for roles in major Hollywood hits but he’s not the kind of celebrity that gets a guest spot on Good Morning America or The Ellen DeGeneres Show just because he ate a carrot; he lost his weight the old-fashioned way: hard work, determination and a real will to be healthy. Embracing a Healthier Lifestyle His superior respond: Ethan Suplee’s path to weight loss was characterised by seriousness and ventured ‘into new unknown territory’, as he explained in an interview with Bodybuilding.com in 2011: ‘I decided that in order to live a long life, I needed to take my health seriously, and this meant doing a lot of things differently in my life — eating more whole foods, less sugar, getting in some form of exercise every day, and finding doctors to help guide me to be healthy and fit.’ By taking bite-sized changes and staying committed to them, Ethan slowly whittled away the pounds and improved his health. Overcoming Obstacles Along this path, Ethan Suplee had to contend with external obstacles putting his resolve to try to lose weight to the test: the allure of junk food comforts, or even drastic weight-loss gains and losses. Rather than let things stand in his way, Suplee stayed the course and pursued his health goal with resoluteness. I think the biggest obstacle he overcame was the fear that he wasn’t good enough. He had struggled with his weight for most of his life and so had to go deep into his subconscious and start addressing issues that he didn’t even realise he had. It’s an obvious sentiment but Ethan couldn’t have done any of this without the self-awareness that he gained from his therapy and the support of his therapist to challenge his negative thoughts and feelings. Ethan had to flip a switch from negative to positive. It sounds trite, and I’m not sure myself if it’s kind of ‘wanky’, but ultimately this is what happened to help Ethan succeed. I’ve written about some of my more shameful moments in my life and have usually concluded that they tie in to the improvements in our relationship and our ability to communicate better. Finally, we can’t forget about Ethan’s outer problems, the external expectations faced by someone who has gathered a non-negligible audience of fans beloved or critical, of detractors or admirers, and especially of commentators and social media. But for all the external noise, Ethan managed it all by sticking to his own plan. He continued doing what he thought was best, pursuing the aims that he wanted to achieve.
